Promethean celebrates inspirational teachers around the world

Published: September 1st, 2014

(ATLANTA – Sept. 2, 2014) –Many adults credit an outstanding teacher with instilling the knowledge, insights, confidence and leadership behaviors that shaped them to become the person they are today. To celebrate these exceptional teachers and recognize their contributions to society, global education technology leader Promethean has created The Cann Awards. Established in honor of Tony Cann, Promethean’s founder, The Cann Awards seek to honor the best in teaching from around the world.

“Teachers inspire us to be our best – to strive to achieve more than we think we are capable of,” said Jim Marshall, CEO of Promethean. “Year after year, teachers across the globe encourage students, motivate them to learn, and guide them to realizing their full potential. If a teacher touched your life, made you feel important, or helped you become the person you are today, The Cann Awards is an opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ and to share the teacher’s story with the world.”

Beginning Sept. 10, 2014, residents of Australia, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States are invited to nominate a teacher who played an integral role in their lives. Entrants may nominate a former teacher by sharing their story through a written essay or a short video/audio tribute. Five teachers will be selected as winners. In addition to being recognized as a recipient of a 2015 Cann Award, Promethean will make a $2,500 donation to the charity or nonprofit organization of the teacher’s choice.

The mission of The Cann Awards is to identify and celebrate the world’s most exemplary teachers. Promethean will form a panel of judges to evaluate all submissions to select the best teachers who:

  • Displayed excellent leadership qualities
  • Encouraged students to explore and create
  • Inspired critical thinking among students
  • Prioritized the individual needs of each learner
  • Gave successful direction to students’ future plans
  • Motivated students toward positive ways of thinking and living
  • Developed problem solving skills and attitudes in students.

The nomination period for the 2014-2015 cycle of The Cann Awards opens Sept. 10 and runs through Nov. 15, 2014. Winners will be announced on Jan. 10, 2015. The five winning teachers, a guest of each one and the former student who nominated them will attend an event in Atlanta, Ga. in January 2015 to receive the award.
