Many adults credit an outstanding teacher with instilling the knowledge, insights, confidence and leadership behaviours that shaped them to become the person they are today. To celebrate these exceptional teachers and recognise their contributions to society, Promethean has created The Cann Awards…
Established in honour of Tony Cann, Promethean’s founder, The Cann Awards seek to honour the best in teaching from around the world. “Teachers are in a highly privileged position where they can ultimately influence the future path of a student. The work of an inspirational teacher today essentially lays the foundations for our world of tomorrow; creating future leaders, innovators and inventors. We owe so much to the work of teachers and The Cann Awards aims to identify unsung teaching heroes from around the world – and officially recognize their inspirational contribution on a global platform,” explains Tony Cann, founder of Promethean.
From 10th September through 15th November, Promethean invited residents from nine countries to nominate a teacher who played an integral role in their life by sharing the story through a written essay or a short video/audio tribute. With the nomination period now closed, Promethean has formed a panel of judges to select five teachers from among the nominations as winners. The mission of The Cann Awards is to identify and celebrate the world’s most exemplary teachers, and with this in mind, the judges will evaluate all submissions to determine the teachers who best:
- Displayed excellent leadership qualities
- Encouraged students to explore and create
- Inspired critical thinking among students
- Prioritized the individual needs of each learner
- Gave successful direction to students’ future plans
- Motivated students toward positive ways of thinking and living
- Developed problem solving skills and attitudes in students.
In addition to being recognized as a recipient of a 2015 Cann Award, Promethean will make a $2,500 donation to the charity or nonprofit organisation of each winning teacher’s choice.
Winners will be announced on 10th January 2015. The five winning teachers, a guest of each one and the former student who nominated them will attend an event in Atlanta, Ga. to receive the award.
