Edtech teaching resources for NAIDOC Week

Published: June 14th, 2022

NAIDOC Week in Australia is taking place from 3rd to 10th July in 2022. This year’s theme, Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! is a call to everyone to take initiative over how we can stand together and make change to positively affect the lives of all Australians.

We at Promethean are proud of the way edtech can introduce a range of topics easily to students. To help teachers prepare for this year’s event, we’ve collected a variety of helpful resources across a broad range of NAIDOC topics for classrooms of all ages.

Acknowledgement of Country poster

Display this editable Acknowledgement of Country poster as a screensaver or background on your ActivPanel to show respect to Australia’s First Peoples. Personalise it by identifying the traditional owners of the land your school is built upon by using this handy tool provided by AIATSIS (the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).

Dust Echoes

The ABC, in collaboration with  the Djilpin Aboriginal Arts Corporation have produced 12 videos based on Dreamtime stories from Central Arnhem Land, collectively titled The Dust Echoes. Each chapter is accompanied by in-depth study guides that span across curricula, designed for years 5 and 6. Play videos for the whole class to see on the ActivPanel, then bring up the PDF resources to annotate and discuss with students.

FirstVoices Keyboards App

The FirstVoices Keyboards app contains keyboard software for many of Indigenous languages of Australia. When installed on the ActivPanel, any of the 100+ custom keyboards of the app can be activated in any application on the device.

This is great for language and history classes of all ages and can be a valuable tool in preserving the rich cultural knowledge of Australia. Aboriginal languages are critically endangered. Of the over 250 estimated Aboriginal languages that existed before colonisation, only 60 are now considered “healthy”, most have been lost or are endangered.

NAIDOC history timeline

Display this PDF NAIDOC history timeline onto your ActivPanel. Using the split screen capabilities, you can show it side-by-side with your lesson content. Or bring it up onto the Whiteboard app as part of a wider presentation to give extra information and context.

Art project inspiration

Why not try a collaborative art project that really demonstrates the values of diversity and unity that NAIDOC Week represents? Have students each take responsibility for one tile of a piece, which fits together to create a rich tapestry of cultural pride.
